Fragrance Oils

One of the major difference between essential oils and fragrance oil is that fragrance oils are synthetically created. This results in the lack of natural healing properties that essential oils offer. Fragrance oils are often used frequently due to its ability to be easily manipulated to create any aroma.

Essential Oils

Do you know the difference between essential oils and fragrance oils? Essential oils are oils that are naturally extracted in various ways directly from plants. However, this does not mean that all plants contain essential oils. Essential oils have been known to be used in aromatherapy to help de-stress, help with muscle pain, skin problems and more.

Saponification

Did you know that in the hot process, saponification is very important? Saponification in the process making soap using either fat or oil, this
is done by hydrolyzing. Hydrolyzing means to break down a compound, fat or oil, by chemical reaction (alkali) with water. In this process, the fat and hydroxide are heated up to 80- 100 degrees Celsius. Unlike the cold process, the exact measurements are not needed. After the saponification process is complete, the excessive liquid is drained and then pour into a mold.

Cold Process and Winners

Did you know that even in the cold process of making soap you still need heat? In order for the fat to melt the temperature needs to raise, making sure the fat is completed melted before being added to the soap. In this process, the measurements need to be exact to make sure that the soap does not have any extra ingredients, such as fat.

Soap in the 18th Century

Around the 16th Century, soap began to use vegetable oil instead of animal fat. Production of soap was mainly produced by small manufacturers. It was not until the 18th Century that soap production was industrialized. One chemical creation that helped increase soap production was the ability to create alkali, a major ingredient in soap, from the sulfates of potash and soda. James Keir was the creator of this chemical creation.

History of Soap- Part 2

Did you know that ancient Romans used a tool called a “strigil” to bathe with? A strigil was made out of metal and was used to scrape off dirt and oil. Ancient Romans would massage oil into their skin and then remove the oil and dirt with a strigil. The use of a strigil sounds a bit rough, but it’s not so different from what most of us do today when we shower. We soap and a loofah, or shower sponge to help remove the dirt and oil.

Babylonians used water, alkali, and cassia oil as ingredients for their soap. The Benefits of Coconut Oil- part 3

Are you ready for more benefits of coconut oil?

Here we go! Coconut oil is also an anti-aging remedy, it can help fight those aging signs such as fine lines and wrinkles.

How does it work? Coconut oil contains antioxidants that can slow the elasticity in your skin from breaking down. Not only does coconut oil help slow the degrading of your skin elasticity, it also contains SPF that can protect your skin from the sun! Although it’s not as strong as when applying sunblock, coconut oil can provide additional protection from the sun. (Remember to wear sunblock!)

Palm oil and coconut oil have wonderful benefits that will leave your skin looking and feeling younger. Two oils down and three more to go, come back and check out what the third oil is in our next blog!
