Saponification

Did you know that in the hot process, saponification is very important? Saponification in the process making soap using either fat or oil, this
is done by hydrolyzing. Hydrolyzing means to break down a compound, fat or oil, by chemical reaction (alkali) with water. In this process, the fat and hydroxide are heated up to 80- 100 degrees Celsius. Unlike the cold process, the exact measurements are not needed. After the saponification process is complete, the excessive liquid is drained and then pour into a mold.

Soap in the 18th Century

Around the 16th Century, soap began to use vegetable oil instead of animal fat. Production of soap was mainly produced by small manufacturers. It was not until the 18th Century that soap production was industrialized. One chemical creation that helped increase soap production was the ability to create alkali, a major ingredient in soap, from the sulfates of potash and soda. James Keir was the creator of this chemical creation.

Did you know that ancient Romans used a tool called a “strigil” to bathe with? A strigil was made out of metal and was used to scrape off dirt and oil. Ancient Romans would massage oil into their skin and then remove the oil and dirt with a strigil. The use of a strigil sounds a bit rough, but it’s not so different from what most of us do today when we shower. We soap and a loofah, or shower sponge to help remove the dirt and oil.

Caffeine in Your System

Did you know that it only takes about 10 minutes for caffeine to kick in within your system? That’s right- coffee is able to you wake up within 10 minutes of consuming it.

How does caffeine wake you up? Caffeine blocks adenosine, a chemical that makes you sleepy by binding to our brain receptor, from binding to your brain receptors because caffeine itself is almost the same size. By blocking adenosine, this will allow you to feel less sleepy.
A study conducted at the University of Barcelona showed that caffeine has a greater effect in males than females. A total of 668 university students (238 males and 45 females) participated in this study, with an average age of 22. Activity levels were measured in various time frames, and results showed higher level activities in male participants than in female participants.

This study also measured activity levels with decaffeinated coffee. Results from the decaffeinated coffee did not show any significant levels of activities between male and female participants. In other studies, researched showed that it takes at least 45 minutes for the highest levels of caffeine to enter your blood system. So after drinking your coffee, you can feel caffeine kick in within 10 minutes, but you do not get the most of it until at least 45 minutes after.

History of Coffee- Part 2

Historical figures and events made coffee one of the world’s most popular drink. As coffee began to trade around the 13th Century, coffee houses and roasting of coffee beans were also introduced. One historical figure that helped people accept coffee was Pope Clement VIII. Pope Clement VIII baptized coffee allowing Christians to drink it.

On the major historical event, which helped with coffee rising popularity in the US was The Boston Tea Party In  1773, when Americans rebelled against England by dumping the tea, which was the most popular drink at that time. Coffee took its place after that event. Brazil played a huge role coffee the popularity of coffee. Coffee plantations in Brazil grew immensely fast, and coffee became over produced. Coffee's over production allowed coffee to be available for everyone and not just to the elites.

At the beginning of the 1900’s, instant coffee was created making it easier to mass produce. The 1920’s prohibition in the US made the coffee sales and consumption soared. In 1938, one of the biggest coffee manufactured in Brazil, Nescafe, develop its own way to freeze dry the instant coffee allowing this to help with the over production.
Once TV was introduced to us, in the 1950’s, commercials of coffee helped spread it all over the US.

Coffee sure has a long history! Check out our next blog for more history facts on coffee. Be on the lookout for Fivesso’s Crowdfunding Campaign in June.

History of Coffee

Let’s get to know coffee! Even though no one really knows how and when coffee was first introduced, the earliest signs of coffee usage were around the 10th century by the Ethiopians.

From Ethiopia to Mecca, by the early 15th-century coffee had made its way into the trading market and was spreading through Egypt and North Africa. Coffee houses, in various locations such as Syria and Istanbul, the capital of Ottoman Empire, had also started to grow and spread. By the 1600’s coffee had spread all over Europe and even traded to the East Indies and later on to the Americas (North and South). Around this time coffee was also introduce to India and later spread all over Asia.

Even though Ethiopia may have been the origin of coffee, it is not one of the largest producers of it. Brazil is the largest coffee producer, followed by Vietnam and then Colombia.

Coffee beans from around the world are unique due to its different flavors, aromas, bodies, and acidities. Here in the United States, more than 150 million Americans drink coffee on a daily basis! That’s a lot of coffee!
