Around
the 16th Century, soap began to use vegetable oil instead of animal fat.
Production of soap was mainly produced by small manufacturers. It was not until
the 18th Century that soap production was industrialized. One chemical creation
that helped increase soap production was the ability to create alkali, a major
ingredient in soap, from the sulfates of potash and soda. James Keir was the
creator of this chemical creation.
