Soap in the 18th Century

Around the 16th Century, soap began to use vegetable oil instead of animal fat. Production of soap was mainly produced by small manufacturers. It was not until the 18th Century that soap production was industrialized. One chemical creation that helped increase soap production was the ability to create alkali, a major ingredient in soap, from the sulfates of potash and soda. James Keir was the creator of this chemical creation.

History of Soap- Part 2

Did you know that ancient Romans used a tool called a “strigil” to bathe with? A strigil was made out of metal and was used to scrape off dirt and oil. Ancient Romans would massage oil into their skin and then remove the oil and dirt with a strigil. The use of a strigil sounds a bit rough, but it’s not so different from what most of us do today when we shower. We soap and a loofah, or shower sponge to help remove the dirt and oil.

Results and Fivesso's Crowdfunding

Let’s check out the results of the previous study we mention early this week. This study was conducted in Berlin, Germany.

Researchers tested topical caffeinated application in two ways, in vitro (test in a test tube) and in vivo (within living organism). Results were then compared. They first test the hair follicles unblocked, and they blocked the hair follicles with a varnish wax mixture. Results showed that both methods revealed similar results, as well as, significant differences. One similarity was that caffeine was detected within minutes of the topical application. Skin tissue from the breast area was collected from plastic surgery, for this experiment. A difference was during in vitro testing, caffeine was detected 2 hours after the topical application was applied. If you are interested, in finding out more on the results check out our source below.

Caffeine Absorption through the Skin Part 2

Let’s check out one more thing before we go over the results of the study mentioned in our previous blog post. Previous research also shows that after applying a caffeinated topical substance on our skin, caffeine was already detected after 5 minutes of the application.

In another study conduct by the British Pharmacological Society, with six healthy male participants, a topical caffeine application was applied to their chest area, and blood samples were taken to measure the level of caffeine in the chest area. The study was performed by blocking and unblocking hair follicles in the chest area. Topical caffeine application was first applied to the unblocked hair follicles. Samples were taken over the next 72 hours, and then after three days of being caffeine free, they were able to re-apply the topical caffeine application to the same area. But this time, they blocked the hair follicles by using a varnish-wax mixture. Results showed that the absorption of caffeine through hair follicles was faster that when caffeine was absorbed thru the first layer of the skin (stratum corneum). The absorption through the first skin layers results was shown by blocking the hair follicles with the varnish-wax mixture. It took caffeine one hour to reach the maximum absorption through the hair follicles. When the hair follicles were blocked, it took over five hours for caffeine to reach its maximum absorption.

Fascinating! Check out the results of the most recent studied in next week’s blog!
